Halloween

DIY Ghost Tutorial

Have you seen the ghost canva going around social media?

It’s truly the best DIY ever. It was a learning experience, but it was very, very fun.

With Halloween being around the corner, it is a perfect thing to do with friends, family, or on your own.

Let’s go back to the benin-ging.πŸ”—

I first saw the ghost canva on TikTok, and I was like Oh my gosh, that is so cute. I NEED it. But it was for $70.00 at the time (it’s now $41.99). I was like, nah, I’m not going to get that. I then saw a video online of someone using spackle to recreate the ghost frame. I then said to myself, “I HAVE TO TRY THAT”. So I got the materials and decided to recreate the Michaels version of the ghost canva.

I would love to share with you the greatness of doing this and the struggles of doing this. It was a learning experience.

The greatness of it: I love staring at it every day, it brings me joy because I know I made it and my own hands made it. I know I struggled with it, but still managed to make it my own. In the end, I didn’t give up. And that jsut makes me feel great about myself. It’s like a reward, I love, love, love it when a DIY actually turns out to be so stinking cute.

The struggles of it: It can be a little difficult to work with and it can also be a little messy, so I do recommend doing it on a table or an area that doesn’t have cloth, once the spackle dries, it is difficult to remove it.

THE VERSION I MADE OF THE GHOST CANVA

The Ghost Canva I made 🧑 (they are in different lightings)

It was so much fun making this Canva, but it was a little stressful. I had never personally worked with spackle, so I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I kind of went into it blindly. I saw a couple of videos here and there because it came across on my FYP.

If you are looking for things to do this Halloween season, this is such a cute, fun thing to do. Its a potential great time with friends, family, or if you are simply just trying to do an activity on your own.

It was a bit messy, but it was easy to clean. The spackle had a frozen whipped cream-like texture. Looking back at the video I made, I realized I was struggling initially because I wasn’t familiar with the texture or anything related to working with spackle. I was learning as I went.

Materials

  • Spackle πŸ”— (1/2 pint is just enough for one person and one canva)
  • Black Paint πŸ”—
  • White Canva πŸ”— or a Black Canva πŸ”— its a little more expensive))
  • Paint Brushes πŸ”—
  • Tool to get spackle πŸ”— and create ghost shapes (if you want something directly from home and not spend more, you can always also get a butter knife, or you can do it how I made it, which is: cut up pieces of cardboard to make different shapes and sizes, and use that.)

I used both the cardboard and my hands, it approximately took me 1 hour to create the ghost shapes. At the end it was very fun to do and super relaxing as well.

Things that were done to create the Ghost Canvas

I found a white canva pack at the thrift store, I know. So cool. (You can also get it directly from Amazon hereπŸ”—).

Since it is a white canvas, I got black paint and painted the canvas black. I let it dry, then I proceeded to form the shapes with spackle onto the canvas. It was interesting at first because I had no idea how it was going to work for me, but with patience I manged to create the ghost shapes.

I started from the top to the bottom, but then kind of stopped mid way, so definetly don’t do that. You should really just start from the top to the bottom and do one row at a time. I honestly believe that any way you do it will be beautiful because you are doing it yourself and you created something with your own hands and that is awesome.

***If you are looking for a more budget friendly option you can use cereal boxes or even cardboard boxes as
your background. Just make sure to add reinforcements to the back so it won’t be as wobbly. That’s the
fun part of DIY’ing things, you can do them however you want!
